Will He Survive?

Scotland allows the only convicted terrorist of the bombing of Pan-Am 103 to go back to Libya because he has terminal cancer leaving him with just a few months to live.  His victims don't have that option to go home to their friends and family.  Megrahi also received accolades when he arrived in Libya, despite Brown's request to keep Megrahi's arrival low-key.

Furthermore, there are allegations that England had made some back room deals in order to open up trade within Libya.  PM Brown denies these allegations, but Colonel Qaddafi's son alludes otherwise.

Will Gordon Brown be able to keep his job as Prime Minister of England?  That would depend on whether his party wants to keep him or whether he can survive a vote of no confidence in Parliament.  Brown has been facing several issues in England and the release of Megrahi may be the tipping point.

Here are just a few:

1.  England's economy is sluggish like  the United States.  England has also spent a great deal of money trying right the ship.

2.  The war in Iraq and Afghanistan is also weighing down on him and his government.

3.  The spending scandal that claimed the jobs of some of the Ministers in Brown's government.

4.  Conservatives picked up seats in the off year elections, as well as elsewhere in Europe.

5.  Finally, the Megrahi release.

The Labour party may see it easier to dump PM Brown in order to try to save their majority in Parliament.

But we also have to wonder, despite an angry letter from FBI Director Robert Mueller, how the Obama administration could let this one slip past them.  England is our closest ally and supposed to be our partner in the war on terrorism.  How can the US State Dept explain why England would allow a terrorist to return home to die, instead of dying in prison serving out the sentence he received for Pan-Am 103?  Will we take steps diplomatically to show our displeasure around this scandal other than a strongly worded letter?  It is also obvious that President George W. Bush also erred by taking Libya off the state sponsor of  terrorism list.  It seems Colonel Qaddafi still has a soft spot in his heart for those that would strike a blow against the "infidels".   And it seems the Obama administration has still not learned how to be a player on the world stage in foreign policy.  But sending Hilary to Africa is apparently a high priority.

There  is currently an effort to boycott Scottish goods because of the release of Megrahi, but PM Brown and his Ministry on Whitehall are the real ones to blame.  We'll have to wait and see if PM Brown will survive this mess and save his Labour party before the next elections.
